Der am 17. Juni 1999 in Deutschland gestartete Film erzielte bei Produktionskosten von ca. 63 Millionen US-Dollar weltweit Einnahmen in Höhe von ca. 456 Millionen US-Dollar. „Die Matrix“ bekam vier Oscars in den Kategorien Sound, Soundschnitt, Visuelle Effekte und Schnitt. Der Film wurde vollständig in Australiens Metropole Sydney gedreht, da die Architektur Sydneys perfekt zum angestrebten Look des Films passte. Große Teile von „Die Matrix“ sind mit Hilfe von Computern bearbeitet wurden oder sogar komplett als Animationen digital entstanden.
„Die Matrix“ vereint die Filmgenres des Science Fiction, der Action und des Thrillers in sich. Eine bedeutende Grundlage, vor allem für die ausgeprägten Actionszenen des Films, lieferten sowohl die futuristischen Mangacomics aus Japan als auch die Kampfchoreographien des Kung Fu, die bereits in den Filmen mit Jackie Chan erfolgreich umgesetzt wurden. Der Handlung von „Die Matrix“ liegen diverse literarische, philosophische, mythologische, apokalyptische, buddhistische und christliche Anspielungen zugrunde.
Diese Mischung aus origineller Story, starken Charakteren, rasanten Actionszenen mit asiatisch angehauchten Kampfstilen und raffinierten Spezialeffekten verhalf dem Film, der von Anfang an von den Wachowski-Brüdern als Trilogie geplant war, wohl zu seinem grandiosen Erfolg.
In dem vorliegenden Buch werden Handlung, Figuren, Virtualität und Farben sowie ausgewählte Symbole des Films „Die Matrix“ analysiert, um letztendlich die Message des Films herauszustellen.
