Unter Gated Communities versteht man „mit einem Tor versehene Gemeinschaften“ . Dabei ist besonders hervorzuheben, dass der Begriff „Community“ sowohl Gemeinde im Sinne einer territorialen Eingrenzung als auch Gemeinschaft im Sinne gemeinsamer verbindender Elemente umfasst. Da es in der deutschen Sprache keinen Begriff gibt, der diese zwei Aspekte adäquat verbindet, wird in dieser Arbeit weiterhin das englische Wort „Community“ verwendet.

Nach Blakely und Snyder gibt es drei Idealtypen von Gated Communities. Der erste Typ wird als Lifestyle Community bezeichnet. Diese Communities bieten viele Annehmlichkeiten und sind auf die Ansprüche bestimmter Gruppen ausgerichtet. So gibt es beispielsweise spezielle Communities für Rentner und solche für Berufstätige, die in ihrer Freizeit gerne Sport treiben.
Eine besondere Form der Lifestyle Communities bilden die „Gated New Towns“. Während die anderen Communities einige Annehmlichkeiten für die Bewohner bieten ist das Gated New Town “keine reine Wohngegend mit einigen Freizeitanlagen, sondern bietet Schulen, Arbeits- und Einkaufsmöglichkeiten sowie Erholungs- und Freizeitangebote“ .
Prestige Communities und Security Zone Communities sind die beiden anderen Idealtypen von Gated Communites. In Prestige Communities gibt es keine gemeinsamen Annehmlichkeiten für die Bewohner. Dort beschränkt sich die Gemeinsamkeit auf den gemeinsamen Wohnort, der Exklusivität verspricht.

Security Zone Communities sind im Gegensatz zu den vorher genannten nicht als solche geplant worden. Die Umgrenzungen werden nachträglich von den Bewohnern einer Nachbarschaft zum Schutz vor Kriminalität und Verkehr errichtet.
In dieser Arbeit soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, inwiefern die Wohnform der Gated Communities typisch amerikanisch ist. Zu diesem Zweck soll zunächst ein kurzer Blick auf die Verbreitung von Gated Communities in den USA und die Geschichte amerikanischer Siedlungsformen geworfen werden. Im Anschluss daran werden die Forschungsergebnisse von Daniela Poeder und Setha M. Low vorgestellt, die sich mit den Motiven der Bewohner in Gated Communities befasst haben. Die Resultate dieser Forschungen werden dann in Zusammenhang mit der Veränderung öffentlichen Raums in den USA gebracht.
Abschließend wird im Fazit die eingangs gestellte Frage beantwortet, inwiefern die Wohnform der Gated Communities typisch amerikanisch ist.
