Die Autorin zeichnet die Schicksale zweier Menschen nach, die sich durch ihre Herkunft, Bildung und ihren bisherigen Lebensweg grundsätzlich unterscheiden. Jan Möller wird als Sohn von aus Ostpreußen eingewanderten Eltern in der Marsch geboren. Er wächst in bittere Armut und harte Arbeit hinein; mit zehn Jahren hütet er Kühe, mit vierzehn wird er Knecht. Schließlich nimmt er eine Zimmermannslehre auf. Als Geselle lernt er sich zu wehren, und so tritt er nach den Jahren seiner Wanderschaft erst der SPD, dann der KPD bei. 1933 wird er zu Stade in »Schutzhaft« genommen, was ihn nicht davon abhält, nach der Freilassung in der Illegalität äußerst intensiv politisch aktiv zu werden. Im August 1934 wird er deshalb abermals verhaftet. Zuchthausjahre in Celle, Gefängnismonate in Hannover und schließlich Einlieferung in das KZ Sachsenhausen folgen. - Endlos lange Jahre hinter Gittern und Stacheldraht.
Dr. Jutta Hartung hingegen wuchs wohlbehütet in bürgerlichen Verhältnissen in Berlin auf. In der Nazizeit ist sie in einer Wirtschaftsbehörde angestellt. Ihre natürliche Menschlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft veranlassen sie zum Handeln. Sie unterstützt heimlich ein jüdisches Ehepaar. Als das Paar dann von den Nazis abgeholt und in ein Lager gebracht wird, empfindet sie Mitschuld an dem Schicksal dieser beiden alten Menschen, die sie nicht hatte retten können.
Eines Tages beobachtet sie, wie in einem benachbarten Haus KZ-Häftlinge unter SS-Bewachung arbeiten. Auch Jan ist unter den Häftlingen. Die SS-Leute mit Zigaretten bestechend bringt sie den Häftlingen nun alle paar Tage Essen. Nach Fertigstellung der Bauarbeiten lässt Jan, der schon lange einen Kontakt nach außen sucht, der unbekannten Helferin einen Brief zukommen. Dies ist der Auftakt zu einer Entwicklung, die das Leben von Jan und Jutta für immer verändern wird.
