Schwachstellen hat jedes Unternehmen, auch die, die ein positives Gesamtergebnis erzielen. Doch das Aufdecken von Schwächen ist nicht genug, es muss für bessere Lösung gesorgt werden.

Genau damit beschäftigt sich das Benchmarking. Es bietet die Möglichkeit Schwachstellen zu erkennen. Doch Benchmarking hört hier nicht auf, sondern sucht nach besseren Lösungen. Es wird über den „Tellerrand“ des eigenen Unternehmens hinaus auf andere Unternehmen geblickt. An anderen Unternehmen wird geprüft, aus welchen Gründen der untersuchte Gegenstand mehr Effizienz aufweist. Danach wird ein Weg gesucht, diese bessere Lösung in das eigene Unternehmen zu integrieren, um Spitzenleistungen zu erzielen.

Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, aufzuzeigen, wie Benchmarking funktioniert. Merkmale dieses Instrumentes und der Ablauf sollen erklärt werden. Die Arbeit soll aber auch prüfen, welche Möglichkeiten es für mittelständische Unternehmen gibt. Welches Potential hat Benchmarking für mittelständische Unternehmen? Diese Fragestellung soll die vorliegende Arbeit untersuchen.

Die vorliegende Bachelor-Arbeit ist dabei wie folgt gegliedert. Nach der Einführung werden die Grundlagen von Benchmarking behandelt. Die Arbeit geht in diesem Abschnitt auf die Entstehung, Definition, Ziele, sowie Arten von Benchmarking ein.

Der nächste Abschnitt beschreibt den Prozess von Benchmarking. Es wird ein gewöhnlicher Ablauf mit den notwendigen Schritten geschildert.

Daran schließt sich das Benchmarking mit dem Fokus auf den Mittelstand an. Nachdem die Definition von mittelständischen Unternehmen aufgezeigt ist, werden die speziellen Anforderungen von diesen Unternehmen an das Benchmarking beschrieben. Mittelständische Unternehmen können neben dem gewöhnlichen Benchmarking auch das beschriebene kennzahlenbezogene Benchmarking nutzen. Dies soll den speziellen Anforderungen von mittelständischen Unternehmen gerecht werden. Anknüpfend behandelt die Arbeit die Vor- und Nachteile von Benchmarking, um das Potential für diese Unternehmen aufzuzeigen.
