Erste textkritische Edition dreier arabischer Texte von Avempace (Ibn Baddscha) über die Bedeutung der Erlangung von Erkenntnis für die Erreichung der Glückseligkeit als Lebensziel des Menschen und erste Übersetzung dieser Texte ins Deutsche.

In gut aristotelischer Tradition war das höchste Ziel des menschlichen Lebens auch bei den Philosophen im islamischen Bereich die Erkenntnis, das ideale und vollkommene Leben. Das Erreichen dieses Zieles war dann gleichbedeutend mit der Glückseligkeit. Al-Farabi (850-950) stellt in dem Traktat Über das Erreichen der Glückseligkeit gleich im ersten Satz fest, dass das, wodurch wir zur Glückseligkeit in diesem Leben und im Leben danach gelangen, an erster Stelle theoretische Tugenden sind, denen praktische Tugenden nachgeordnet seien. Avempace (um 1060-1139) hat dieses Ziel in den hier vorgelegten Texten in noch schärferer und ausschließlicherer Form vertreten, und Averroes (1126-1198) hat es dann mit der größten Selbstverständlichkeit übernommen. Dass ein derart primär auf Theorie ausgerichtetes Lebensziel eigentlich der arabischen und islamischen Kultur ziemlich fremd ist, hat keinen dieser Philosophen davon abgehalten, diese Idee zu verfolgen und zu vertreten. Sie hielten sich an das, was sie in den aus dem Griechischen übersetzten Texten vorfanden.

Alle, die sich etwas intensiver mit der Philosophie des Mittelalters beschäftigen, kennen daher den Namen Avempace und seine Bedeutung als Interpret der Philosophie des Al-Farabi und Wegbereiter für die Philosophie des Averroes; gleichwohl gab es bisher keinen einzigen Text von Avempace in deutscher Übersetzung und auch keine Edition der arabischen Texte auf Grundlage der überlieferten Handschriften.
