The book "Apostles of Equality: The
Birneys, the Republicans and the Civil War," published in 2011 by Michigan
State University Press, tells of one of the nation's most courageous but unsung
heroes and his offspring.
James G. Birney was born in 1792 to a
slave-holding plantation family in Kentucky. The dramatic tale of his
transformation from slaveholder to the first political leader of abolition will
inspire all freedom-loving Americans.
Michael Matthews, a slave given to
him at age 6, became his personal friend and boyhood companion. That friendship
was a key to James G. Birney's lifetime insistence on following Thomas
Jefferson's "all men are created equal" statement in the Declaration of
Independence.
One of the major figures behind the
end of slavery in America, Birney, a little-known lawyer from Kentucky and
Alabama sacrificed his fortune and social status in the cause of equality.
After decades in the South, trying futilely
to convince slaveholders to repent, Birney moved North to Saginaw County,
Michigan. He was distraught after gaining only about 7,000 votes for President
in the 1840 election, in which he became the first candidate to espouse
anti-slavery sentiments.
Nominated again by the abolitionist
Liberty Party in 1844, from his base in Lower Saginaw (later Bay City) Birney's
crusade grew the anti-slavery movement gradually. Finally, in 1854
abolitionists gathered in Jackson, Michigan and in Wisconsin to form the
Republican Party.
Devoting almost their entire platform
to abolition, the new party took the Presidency on its second attempt with a
back-country Illinois lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, at its head. The South erupted in
outrage at the election of Lincoln, cannon roared at Ft. Sumter and Civil War
ensued.
Birney had died in New Jersey but
several of his abolitionist sons, including two Union major generals, carried
the banner to battle in the South alongside Northerners still conflicted about
race. Birney's legacy continues to inspire today.
