Eine irrationale Protagonistin, die bis in den Tod auf ihrer Identität insistiert, dabei scheinbar nicht auf die "menschliche Herde" angewiesen ist und darüber dennoch nicht hysterisch oder psychotisch wird, stand ebenso im Widerspruch zum naturalisierenden viktorianischen Diskurs über Weiblichkeit, wie die fiktionale Erkundung des Komplexes Kultur, Sexualität und Tod Illusionen zu demontieren drohte, die als gesellschaftliches Fundament fungierten und bis heute fungieren. Dass diese konterdiskursive Infragestellung kulturerhaltender Ordnungsphantasmen zu einer massiven Verdrängung des Textes - nicht zuletzt unter dem Signum der Kulturversagung - geführt hat, überrascht kaum. Der Tenor zeitgenössischer Rezensionen bezeugt eine signifikante Ablehnung:"[...] it leaves one sick of human nature" (Awakening: 163), "its disagreeable glimpses of sensuality are repellent" (Awakening: 166), "gilded dirt" (Awakening: 167), "an essentially vulgar story" (Awakening: 168), "unhealthily introspective and morbid in feeling" (Awakening: 170), "unwholesome in its influence" (Awakening: 172).
Es handelt sich dabei um viel mehr als nur um "vestiges of Victorian prudery" (Walker 1993: 141). Eine derart vehemente, mehr moralisch als ästhetisch begründete Ablehnung lässt vermuten, dass der Roman an neuralgische Punkte der Kultur wie auch der menschlichen Identität rührt. Es geht um Fragen, die nicht gestellt werden dürfen. Dass Nietzsche und Freud sich mit ähnlichen Reaktionen konfrontiert sahen, ist ebenso wenig ein Zufall wie die Tatsache, dass ihre Gedanken sehr produktiv für die Interpretation des Textes genutzt werden können. Welche diskursiven Praktiken im Blick auf Kanonbildung und Zensur wurden aktiviert, um das subversive énoncé des Textes zu verdrängen?
