Julie Warner lenkte ihren Jeep von der asphaltierten Landstraße auf eine kleine Nebenstraße. Die junge Frau folgte einem Wegweiser. Gespannt forschten ihre Blicke die Straße hinunter. Daß es so viel Wald überhaupt noch gibt, ist eine wundervolle Sache, dachte Julie. Dennoch, der Wald wirkte nicht einladend auf sie. Die Straße wurde mit jedem Meter, den Julie auf ihr fuhr, schlechter. Ein gewöhnliches Auto wäre hier schnell liegen geblieben. Sie war froh, daß sie sich vor einigen Monaten gegen den Rat ihres damaligen Freundes Henry entschlossen hatte, den Jeep zur Occasion zu kaufen. Henry hatte argumentiert, daß man einen Jeep in der Londoner Innenstadt kaum parken könnte. Damit hatte er wohl recht, aber Julie fuhr eh nicht mit dem Wagen in die City, sondern nahm lieber den Bus oder die U-Bahn. Im Nachhinein hatte sie das Gefühl, Henry wollte einfach nicht, daß sie einen größeren Wagen fuhr als er. Nun, das war vorbei. Sowohl Henry, als auch alle Sorgen, die damit verbunden waren. Und die Sorgen mit Henry waren nicht wenige gewesen. Ständig hatte er Julie das Gefühl vermittelt, etwas zu verbergen. Auch hatte er zuweilen unstimmige Angaben gemacht. Wenn sie ihn überraschend anrief, hatte sie oft das Gefühl, daß ihm ihr Anruf unangenehm war.
