Erst waren es nur armselige Holzbuden, die sie sich zusammengezimmert hatten, dann aber entstanden feste Bauten, denn Steine gab es in den Mountains genug. Die Häuser flankierten nur die eine Seite der Mainstreet, auf der anderen führte die Bahnstrecke entlang. Dann kam der Creek, der aber an diesem Tag von den Stepwalks aus nicht mehr zu erkennen war. Auf der Straße war niemand zu sehen, bei diesem Wetter blieben die Menschen lieber in ihren Häusern. Der Wind kam von Süden und drückte gegen die Scheiben. Regen und Schnee verschmolzen zu einem Brei und machten das Glas undurchsichtig.
