Kann diese Aussage in der heutigen Zeit, in der zunehmend die Kunst des Sehens verlernt wird, noch so vertreten werden?
1743 fertigte der berühmte britische Maler, Satiriker und Karikaturist William Hogarth (1697-1764) den Gemäldezyklus "Marriage à la mode" an und veröffentlichte dazu 1745 eine Kupferstichreihe. William Hogarth stand in einer besonderen Beziehung zum Theater der damaligen Zeit. Neben vielen Theaterbesuchen war er auch mit dem Schauspieler Garrick und dem Schriftsteller Henry Fielding befreundet. Die Londoner Bühne diente dem Maler als Inspiration für seine Kunst. Es wurde nachgewiesen, dass von 100 Werken Hogarths (darunter Gemälde, Kupferstiche und Zeichnungen) 40 von ihnen ganz deutlich mit dem Theater in Verbindung gebracht werden können. Hogarth selbst sagte, dass seine Kunst wie eine Theateraufführung betrachtet werden sollte:
my Picture was my Stage and men and women
my Actors who were mean[s] of certain Actions
and Express[ions] to Exhibit a dumb shew [sic.]

Theaterikonographie, ein Gebiet der Theaterwissenschaft, befasst sich mit Bildquellen, die über die Theaterkultur einer bestimmten Zeit Aufschluss geben können.
