Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 1,0, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der Begriff der Oppidakultur oder Oppidazivilisation ist in unserer Vorstellung untrennbar mit der Welt der spätkeltischen Latènekultur verbunden. Er beschreibt ein genuin europäisches Phänomen, das sich etwa innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts über ganz Mittel- und Westeuropa ausbreitete. Oft wird in diesem Zusammenhang von den „frühesten Städten nördlich der Alpen“ gesprochen. In neuerer Zeit wird diese Bezeichnung allerdings kontrovers diskutiert. Zwar ist die Bezeichnung der Oppida als Städte inzwischen relativ unstrittig, die Frage, ob sie nun tatsächlich die frühesten sind, bleibt bisher unbeantwortet. Vor allem die Erkenntnisse aus den immer intensiver untersuchten unbefestigten Flachlandsiedlungen wie Berching-Pollanten und böhmische „Produktionszentren“, die ebenfalls stadtähnliche Strukturen aufweisen, sprechen inzwischen dafür, den Oppida diesen Titel abzuerkennen.
Im Folgenden werde ich das Phänomen der Oppidazivilisation im Allgemeinen eingehender darstellen, um dann anhand von Manching ein Oppidum im Besonderen vorzustellen. Manching bietet sich einerseits für diese Aufgabe an, da es mit einer untersuchten Fläche von 20ha das besterforschte keltische Oppidum ist, andererseits ist es schwierig, Manching als Beispiel für ein typisches Oppidum heranzuziehen. Wie gezeigt werden soll, unterscheidet es sich nicht nur in seiner Lage im Gelände, sondern vor allem in seiner Besiedlungsgeschichte und der Entwicklung zur Stadt von anderen Oppida. So liefert Manching auch zu der weiter oben angesprochenen Forschungsdiskussion einen wertvollen Beitrag, der im Folgenden diskutiert werden soll.
