Die isländische Populärmusikszene präsentiert sich als ein vielschichtiges soziologisches Phänomen. Trotz des Hintergrunds einer sehr kleinen Population, genießen zahlreiche PopmusikerInnen aus Island eine internationale Aufmerksamkeit. KünstlerInnen wie Björk und Sigur Rós überzeugen viele Rezipienten mit teils unkonventionellen Klangstrukturen. Gegenstand der Forschung ist die Herausarbeitung der Originalität der isländischen Populärmusikszene mit dem gleichzeitigen Versuch einer Beleuchtung der möglichen Hintergründe für diese Entwicklungen. Dazu wurde eine umfangreiche Deskription der Musikszene vorgenommen, welche zahlreiche Stationen der Entwicklung von Popmusik in Island veranschaulicht. Zu nennen ist hier die Ausarbeitung der Musikgeschichte des Landes, die Vorstellung wichtiger KünstlerInnen und Projekte sowie die Darstellung klangspezifischer Merkmale in der isländischen Popmusik.
Die Analyse der Hintergründe für die Entwicklung der Musikszene erfolgt anhand von drei Konzepten. 1. Die isländischen Identitätsmerkmale, 2. Die Theorie der Settler Societies (Lipset 1979; Tomasson 1980) und 3. Das musiksoziologische Konzept Popular Music, Identity and Place (Connell/ Gibson 2003).


The Icelandic popular music scene is a distinctive phenomenon. Despite a small number of inhabitants there is a huge amount of musicians in Iceland and a lot of them have made it to the international market. Fans all around the world listen to the very particular sounds of Björk, Sigur Rós, and other Icelandic artists. This paper examines the backgrounds of this development and shows how popular music became a serious issue in Iceland.

Three sociological concepts are used to examine the phenomenon: first the analysis of the “Icelandic identity”, then the “Settler Societies” theory by Lipset (1979) and Tomasson (1980) and finally the concept “Popular Music, Identity and Place” by Connell and Gibson (2003).
