Wenn er mich nun gar nicht haben will?« Ihm wird nichts anderes üb-rigbleiben, dachte Eliza Grass. Ihr lag nur daran, so rasch wie möglich von der Gegenwart dieses Kindes befreit zu werden. Der Anblick seiner großen unschuldigen Augen rief immer wieder heftige Gewissensbisse in ihr hervor. »In einer halben Stunde fahren wir zum Flugplatz, Dan«, sprach sie weiter. »Nimm nicht so viele Spielsachen mit. Dein Vater wird dir schon neue kaufen.« »Ich nehme ja nur Judy mit«, erwiderte der kleine Junge mit erstickter Stimme.
»Und da wäre noch etwas, Dan«, sagte Eliza Grass nach kurzem Zögern. »Ich kann nicht mitfliegen. Meine Mutter ist plötzlich krank geworden. Ich habe schon alles geregelt. Die Stewardeß wird sich um dich kümmern.« Entgegen ihren Erwartungen machte es dem kleinen Dan gar nichts aus, daß er allein fliegen sollte.
