Die Verantwortung für solch einen Fonds liegt in den Händen der Fondsmanager, die über strategische Ausrichtung und Portefeuille entscheiden. Im November 2006 beschrieb die Tageszeitung „Die Welt“ unter dem Artikel „Das Leben der Besseren“ Fondsmanager als „berechnend, feierfreudig und ziemlich reich“. Einer der erfolgreichsten Anleger und zugleich einer der reichsten Männer der Welt, Warren Buffett, auch genannt das „Orakel von Omaha“ – bezeichnet Derivate als „finanzielle Massenvernichtungswaffen“.

Neben den bereits erwähnten Hedgefonds stehen auch Private-Equity-Gesellschaften unter dem Vorwurf als einzige Zielsetzung die Gewinnmaximierung zu verfolgen und sehr oft moralische Beweggründe, wie die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen, außer Acht zu lassen. Private Equity als Form der Fremdinvestition ist unter anderem durch die von Franz Müntefering angeregte “Heuschreckendebatte“ in die öffentliche Kritik geraten.

In seinem im Jahre 2007 erschienenen Buch „Mein Leben für die Wirtschaft“ schreibt Alan Greenspan zum Thema Hedgefonds unter anderem: „Für viele gut ausgebildete Menschen und Institutionen waren hohe Gewinne schon immer attraktiv. Besonders auffällig ist die Wiederbelebung der Hedgefonds. Was vor 50 Jahren ein exotisches Randgebiet des Finanzwesens war, hat sich in eine von US – Unternehmen dominierte dynamische Branche verwandelt, die Umsätze in Billionenhöhe erzielt. Hedgefonds und Fonds von privatem Beteiligungskapital könnten die Finanzwelt der Zukunft werden.“
