Während Inhalt, Handlungs- und Spannungsaufbau sowie filmische Umsetzung Parallelen zeigen, so weichen beide Werke sowohl in der Zeichnung der Hauptcharaktere als auch in der Darstellung und Interpretation des Themas Gewalt stark voneinander ab. Auf eben diese Abweichungen konzentriert sich die folgende Arbeit.

Thompson rückt die Darstellung einer Jagd in den Mittelpunkt seines Films. Für ihn ist Gewalt, sowohl psychische als auch physische, das Mittel, um diese Jagd zu inszenieren. Scorsese hingegen dient die Gewalt als reinigendes, fast religiöses Element. Erstellt die Frage nach Schuld und Sühne. Für ihn ist Gewalt das Mittel, einer „letzten Wahrheit“ näher zu kommen.

Der erste Teil dieser Arbeit beleuchtet Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede bezüglich der o.a. Punkte Aufbau und Umsetzung. Im Folgenden wird auf die Darstellung der Hauptpersonen eingegangen, während schließlich die Aspekte von Gewalt analysiert werden.
