Wie sind Ciceros moralische Vorschriften an den Einwohner des Staates vereinbar mit den soziopolitischen Begebenheiten der späten Republik? Diese Fragen gilt es zu erhellen, indem der Autor in den Kontext der administrativen Führungsschicht, der politischen Kulisse Ciceros letzter Lebensjahre und seines idealtypischen Menschenbildes erfasst wird.

Ciceros Werk De Officiis ist in drei Bücher gegliedert und Orientiert sich wie Cicero eigens betont zumindest in den ersten beiden nah an dem griechischem Philosophen und politischen Berater Panaitios, welcher schon etwa 90 Jahre zuvor eine Abhandlung über die Pflichten schrieb.
Cicero schreibt in erster Linie als Vater zu seinem Sohn, der in Athen einem Studium der Philosophie nachgeht. Er folgt hier dem großen Vorbild Cato, welcher prominent die tugendhafte Lehre für den Sohn verfasste. Strittig in der Literatur ist, inwiefern Cicero nicht doch eine breitere Masse aus der römischen Elite ansprechen wollte, wie es aus einem Brief an Atticus hervorgehe . Allerdings besagen die über das Buch verstreuten persönlichen Anreden in Dialogform, dass sich der Vater seine Rolle durchaus immer wieder bewusst gemacht hat. Die äußere Form der „Pflichten“ stellt einen Brief an den Sohn dar, ist aber ein mit pädagogischer Systematik und der entsprechenden Autorität bis hin zur Dogmatik angelegter Lehrbrief, der den jungen Cicero in den Tagen, als die Republik 44 v. Chr. im „Todeskampf“ lag, auf den rechten Weg bringen sollte, damit dieser den angesehenen Stand des homo novus erreiche, wie es schon Cicero geschafft hat, als Bürger in die höchsten Kreise aufzusteigen. Diese Bemühungen waren nicht sehr Fruchtbar, wie der weitere Werdegang des Adressaten noch zeigen sollte aber der postalische Erhalt ist auch nicht an die Nachwelt überliefert. Johann schreibt Cicero die Rolle des politischen Erziehers zu, die meiner Einschätzung nach auch auf De Officiis anwendbar ist.
Pohlenz versieht den Autor andererseits mit dem Motiv, seinem Philosophischen Gesamtwerk einen krönenden Abschluss zu geben, das den Römern eine eigene schriftliche Ethik schenkt. Ich will an dieser Stelle nicht für eine einzelne Intuition eintreten. Viel wahrscheinlicher ist ein Zusammenspiel aus mehreren Ursachen, die sich gegenseitig nicht ausschließen.
